Description | The Okanagan Fruit Tree Project is a registered charity that aims to reduce hunger by turning backyard fruit trees into a source of healthy food for the community. Fruit and vegetables are harvested by a team of energetic volunteers and shared with local organizations like the Food Banks, Schools, seniors programs, shelters and many more. Since our start in 2012, we have picked thousands of pounds of fresh fruit with over 400 volunteers.
Benefits | - A steady supply of fruit and your chance to pick it throughout the season (think cherries, apricots, plums, apples, and nuts… yum!) - A chance to build community, meet new people, and help the environment - An opportunity to gain valuable work experience and develop leadership skills. We are happy to provide reference letters for employment, sign off on volunteer hours, etc.
Skills/Experience | Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Fruit Tree Project and our success would truly not be possible without individuals like you! To continue to be successful in 2020, we are in need of Harvest Leaders. The amount of harvests we organize depends on how many volunteers to lead them! What is a Harvest Leader? “Harvest Leaders” are specially trained volunteers that go the extra mile to help get the fruit from the orchard or farm to the charity! Why become a Harvest Leader? It doesn't get more “hands on” than this! Help contribute to food security and make a difference in your community. This position is the backbone of the Fruit Tree Project, without Harvest Leaders we simply couldn't do it. Help divert fruit from going to waste and reallocate the harvest to those most in need. How does it work? -You receive communications from our coordinator with details for the upcoming harvests in need of a Harvest Leader. Simply reply when you can lead a pick so that it suits your schedule. Each Fruit Harvest Involves: - Pick up equipment from our shed located near Orchard Park Mall (with your own vehicle) a ½ hour before the pick starts - Greet volunteers and lead a safe and fun pick - Bring equipment back to the shed - Fill out a short post-pick report. Easy! - Approximately a 3-4 hour volunteer shift.
